We Built This Agency Because We Kept Seeing the Same Problem.

Great contractors losing work to weaker competitors. Businesses built on skill and reputation, invisible to the customers who would hire them without hesitation. And agencies making things worse: cookie-cutter strategies, no industry knowledge, and long contracts with nothing to show for them. Throttled Up exists because that gap shouldn’t exist.

How This Started

We kept meeting contractors who had been burned. An agency that promised 25 leads a month and delivered 5. A freelancer who built a website and disappeared. A marketing company that couldn’t tell a dozer from a skid steer but charged $3,000 a month for ads that went nowhere. Every one of those experiences left the same mark: a contractor who now believes marketing doesn’t work for their type of business. It does. The problem was never the concept. It was the fit.

We built Throttled Up to do one thing well: marketing for contractors in excavation, land clearing, welding, construction, septic, and agriculture. Every strategy, every website, every campaign is built around how customers in these trades actually search, evaluate, and hire. Defined scope. Fixed deliverables. Transparent pricing. Ryan has spent years working directly with trades business owners across excavation, HVAC, electrical, landscaping, plumbing, and more. He’s sat in the room with hundreds of contractors describing the same problems: a business built entirely on referrals with no backup plan, a slow month that turns into a slow quarter, a competitor with half the skill getting twice the calls. He knows what keeps contractors stuck because he’s heard it described firsthand, in detail, over and over again.
That pattern is why he built Throttled Up, and it’s why he wrote Outta the Weeds: How to Build a Business That Doesn’t Run You. The book came from the same conversations that built the agency: real operators, real problems, and a gap that nobody in the marketing world was filling.

Clay Deal

Founder

Clay brings over 15 years of marketing experience, most of it spent inside the agency world that Throttled Up was built to replace. As Director of Media at Simantel, he managed $20M+ in annual media spend across national accounts in insurance, healthcare, and B2B. He grew that department from 3 to 15 people and doubled its revenue. Before that, he served as Director of Sales and Marketing for an agricultural equipment manufacturer, where he doubled the dealer network and drove record company profits through the business’s first real marketing strategy. He’s run campaigns for brands like Maui Jim, founded three profitable businesses of his own, and holds a Master of Science in Digital Marketing from Northern Illinois University (4.0 GPA, Outstanding Achievement Scholarship).
He started Throttled Up because the view from inside big agencies made the problem impossible to ignore. Contractors and small business owners paying serious money for junior staff, recycled strategies, and reporting designed to look busy. The gap between what agencies charged and what they actually delivered was obvious to anyone who cared enough to look.
